When walking, secretly drop an object that you held in your pocket. Walk ten to fifteen steps further, stop and ask the dog: “Where is it? Can you help me? FIND!”
Then walk back to where you dropped the object. Encourage the dog to sniff the ground by pointing your finger at the ground and give him the command “find”. Give your dog the chance to find the object himself. As soon as the dog points the object, you reward him exuberantly. The level of difficulty can be increased by allowing longer time between dropping and searching, by throwing the object to the side of the walkway or even from the path or dropping several objects. Also vary the type of object you use. Pay attention: metal and hard objects do not hold the smell as well as woven fabric or leather and your dog will have to come closer to the object in order to locate it.
